A decadent dessert that has all of THREE ingredients and is amazingly easy to prepare. Yes, please! PLUS it’s make-ahead so no need for last-minute prep!

There are many different versions of the chocolate mousse, but the classic French recipe is probably the simplest chocolate mousse recipe of them all. If you have dark chocolate and eggs, you are all set. You could even call it a healthy chocolate mousse seeing as there is no added sugar in this recipe. If you like your dessert a bit sweeter you can just use milk chocolate.

NB! The one really crucial thing to keep in mind is the freshness of the eggs. Since the eggs will not be cooked at all, you will want the freshest possible eggs you can find.

It is also important to have good quality chocolate as it is the one and only thing giving taste to your dessert.

And did I mention the part that it is a totally make-ahead dessert! Everything will be ready when the guests arrive! Or just when you finish your dinner and want to curl up with a book or in front of your favorite series and savor a lovely airy dessert.

Classic French Chocolate Mousse Recipe
Ingredients

Makes about 6 servings depending on the size of your serving bowls.

  • 200 g (7 ounces) dark chocolate
  • 5 eggs
  • A tiny pinch of salt
Instructions

Melt chocolate slowly on a double boiler of in the microwave. Let cool a bit (but not too long since it will firm up again).

Separate the egg yolks from the whites.

Beat the egg whites and a pinch of salt into firm peaks.

Stir the egg yolks in the melted chocolate.

Add a few spoonfuls of egg whites into the chocolate mixture and stir well until smooth.

Pour gradually the chocolate into the egg whites and fold together. Be careful not to overmix or to stir too vigorously for it would cause the egg whites to fall.

Divide into serving bowls or cups. You can grate some chocolate or use sprinkles on top for garnish.

Let rest in the refrigerator for at least 4 hour and preferably overnight.

Depending on what you have in the fridge I would suggest you cover the recipients with a plastic wrap to keep the smells of other food out. In France you have quite often some kind of stinky cheese around so here it is an absolute must πŸ˜„.

At dessert time just open the refrigerator, take out your beautiful chocolate mousse and serve!
