I finally found my go-to sugar cookie recipe! This easy dough makes perfect cut-out cookies every time! It is easy to work with and keeps well in the fridge. Oh, and it freezes like a dream!

I don’t know about you, but I have had a hard time finding the ONE sugar cookie recipe that I would love. There was always something off. Often the dough was hard to work with. The cookies always puffed up too much or lost their shape. They were either too crunchy or too soft and fragile.
But then I made two tweaks: I switched the regular sugar against the powdered sugar and I added cornstarch.
It’s like magic ! The cookies have a great texture and always hold shape. The dough is super easy to work with! I give you the PERFECT sugar dough for cut-out cookies!
Perfect Sugar Cookie Recipe
Ingredients
- 250 g (1 cup) of butter, softened
- 170 g (1 1/2 cup) of powdered sugar
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract (or 1 pack, about 10g of vanilla sugar)
- 1 large egg
- 400 g (2 1/2 cups) of flour
- 100 g (3/4 cup & 1 tbsp) cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp of salt
Instructions
Cream together butter, sugar and vanilla.
Add the egg, beat until smooth.
Mix together flour, salt and cornstarch.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and mix together.
Knead softly until smooth and holds together.
Flatten the dough in a disc, wrap it in plastic film and let rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour and up to three days.
For baking heat the oven to 180C/ 350F.
Roll out the dough about 5 mm (~1/4 inch) thick.
Use your favorite cutters to cut out your desired shapes and place cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Bake for 7-10 minutes at 180C/350F. Keep a close eye on the baking, you want the cookies to be baked but not colored.
Maple Icing Recipe
Ingredients
- 60 g / 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 20g / 1 tbsp maple syrup
Instructions
Stir the maple syrup and powdered sugar together until smooth and glossy. Adjust thickness by adding more syrup or more sugar.
Spoon the icing in a freezer bag. Seal with a tight knot. Chip a tiny corner of the bag with scissors and start decorating!
You can store the baked sugar cookies for up to 1 week in an airtight container.
Since these cookies hold their form really well, they are perfect for making beautiful icing-decorated creations. And besides holding their form they also taste wonderful which makes them a delight to nibble on without any add-ons as well.
