Pink heart cookies for Valentines Day

Valentines Day is a holiday that is much less celebrated in Europe than in the Americas. But like with Halloween, now, having kids, I feel like celebrating all holidays just to see the smiles on their faces and the wonder in their eyes!

We will not be going crazy with everything pink, but some Valentines Day crafts, a few decorations and lots of heart-shaped snacks are sure to make an appearance during the two weeks ahead of us.

How to make pink heart cookies

Ingredients

  • Your favorite sugar cookie dough
  • Red food coloring (*see below for natural coloring ideas)
  • Chocolate chips

Instructions

Add a few drops of red food coloring to your favorite sugar cookie dough. (If you’re looking for recipe, I posted a really foolproof cookie dough recipe a few weeks ago😉). Mix until completely incorporated and dough is a darker shade of pink (the cookies will get less saturated while baking)

Roll the dough to about 3-5 mm (0,2 inches) thickness.

Cut out heart-shaped cookies and place them on a baking sheet.

Press 3-4 chocolate chips in each cookie.

Bake according to the dough recipe instructions. If you’re using my perfect sugar cookie recipe, that’ll be 7-10 min at 180C/350F.

Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 min to set a bit, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool down completely.

NB! An obvious reminder: If you want to package them as a gift be careful to wait until the chocolate chips are completely set to the touch, otherwise you’ll smear chocolate everywhere (yes, talking from experience😄).

* If you don’t want to use the store bought food coloring you can add a few drops of beet juice or raspberry juice to your dough. It works perfectly well here! If you add much liquid and you feel that the texture of the dough changed, you can balance it out with 1 tbs of flour.
